Phonics instruction is the practice of helping children to understand the connection between sounds and symbols.  Children learn that each letter has a name and most importantly, a sound or several sounds.  While there are many, many ways to approach phonics instruction, a systematic and explicit approach is crucial to children’s skill development.  However, phonics is a small but important facet of children’s language and literacy development and must be balanced with other practices such as story telling, read alouds, learning to love books, journaling, and drawing/writing.
